One of our contacts at a local animal hospital reached out to us asking for assistance with a dog the owner was wishing to euthanize. Euthanasia was scheduled based on initial phone consult but the actual story came out with further discussion and the staff did not feel euthanasia was warranted.
Story given to the staff by the family...
She had a senior pack mate who was blind and going deaf. She grew up with this dog and began protecting and guiding him as he aged since he began having trouble navigating the home. Just before the Christmas, a large number of family members arrived from out of town that the dogs were not familiar. The family all stayed at the house preparing for the holidays. An argument occurred between some of the adults in the home that got loud with aggressive behavior. The senior pack mate ended up in the line of fire and Olive got in between him and the family members to protect her friend. When the angry adult got close and was yelling at the dogs, she growled.

Despite the fact that the humans were self-admittedly acting in a hostile manner, people were screaming in the home and she had never shown any signs of aggression towards people, her behavior was deemed to be "too aggressive" by the family she lived her whole life with and they wished to schedule euthanasia.

Olive presented to the veterinary staff as a happy and healthy dog who wagged her tail, gave kisses and was playful. While cautious of men (which led them to believe she experienced a negative situation with a male in the home) she never showed any signs of aggression and would rather hide than be confrontational. With patience, she was able to warm up to the male staff without issue. No one felt comfortable with euthanasia for this sweet girl.

The family agreed to transfer of care and then transfer was made to Misfit Ranch on December 30th, 2024. Our social media following helped us name her Olive.

Olive's medical intake revealed she was a happy, healthy girl who was already spayed. She has a small cyst under the skin on the back of her head that was aspirated and found to be not concerning. It causes no pain or discomfort to Olive and only noticeable if pointed out.

We provided a full set of vaccinations and had her microchipped.

Olive is currently in the training phase of her intake. She is starting with basic obedience and will move on to socialization and confidence building, in the hopes to decrease her fear of men.

Despite being discarded by the only family and home she ever knew, Olive has shown courage and resiliency! She has really come out of her shell in such a short time and has become quite the goofball. Although she is timid around men when first meeting someone new, it hasn't take her long to open up and will be perfectly fine in a male household if the male is willing to be just a little patient with her. It literally only took her 3 days.

Olive's focus and joy is spending time with her people, regardless of the activity. While she enjoys going on walks and would be a great hiking buddy she is also just as happy cuddling on the couch, taking long afternoon naps and watching a movie.

She grew up with little kids of varying ages in the home without issue.

While she is dog selective (meaning she likes some dogs and not others), she lived with other dogs (big and small) in her previous home for 5 years without issue. She communicates very clearly about dogs she is not comfortable around so an introduction with any potential pack mates would be needed during a meet and greet.

We love this goofball and we are sure you will too!
